Modern, Colorful Kasuri-Dye Cotton Muffler

Modern, Colorful Kasuri-Dye Cotton Muffler

This 100% cotton muffler combines traditional Edo-era dyeing techniques with a vivid four-color (black, green, red and indigo) dot pattern. It can be worn with the fabric flat to reveal its bold hues, or twisted and rolled for a more muted effect.

The fine cotton makes this an all-season item - warm and snug in the cold, or cool and sweat-absorbent in the heat. Measuring 200cm (6'7") in length, it's large enough to double as a warm and stylish shawl. Like all kasuri cotton items, this muffler will continue to get softer and smoother as it is worn and washed over the years.

This item is crafted by Shigetoshi Maruyama, a fifth-generation fabric dyer and weaver from a Kyushu family company going back 150 years. Maruyama combines traditional "kasuri" dying techniques from his hometown of Kurume with a modern sensibility and color palette.

Unlike with printed cloth, the patterns in kasuri fabric are produced by the Ikat technique, weaving resist-dyed cotton weft threads against solid-color warp threads. Since only a few bolts of each fabric are woven, stocks of these items in a specific pattern or color are very limited.
